Bettie O'Neal Martin Corkern passed away in Temple, Texas, on Thursday, June 20, 2019.
Visitation will be held in the Groesbeck Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, June 23, 2019 from 1:00-1:45 pm and Graveside services will begin at 2:00 pm on Sunday at Fort Parker Memorial Park, Groesbeck.
Bettie was born August 19, 1929, near Groesbeck to Connie and Clara Esslinger O’Neal. She married Glen Martin in 1950 and he preceded her in death in 1974. She married Percy E. Corkern in 1981 and he passed away in 1990. She has resided in the Temple area since 1987.
She received her graduate certification in American Institute of Banking from the University of Houston and a Master in commercial banking from the University of Wisconsin. She also has associate and other extended degrees from the University of Houston and the University of Wisconsin. Bettie has worked in several banks from 1948 to 1989, including First National of Temple, which is now Extraco Bank. Bettie served as treasurer for the Central Texas Republican Women and Pepper Creek Water Supply in Temple. She volunteered 6900 hours at the Olin E. Teague Hospital in Temple. She was active in the Ladies Auxiliary to the VFW Post 1820. She had been a member of the Central Texas Republican Women since 1984 and served as treasurer in the 1990’s.
Bettie was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church for many years before she moved her membership to Calvary Baptist Church. She resided at Garden Estates Senior Living since September 2015.
She is survived by one brother, Henry O’Neal and wife, Brenda; one sister, Martha Watts; many nieces and nephews; and her best friend Gwen Schwarz.
