Pearl VADEN

Grayson County Poor Farm Cemetery
Grayson County,
Texas

Died an infant

This is the gravestone of my great aunt, Pearl Vaden. She was born in 1876 and died in 1878. She’s buried with her grandparents in what became the Grayson County poor farm but at the time was the Vaden cemetery. I don’t know this for a fact but she probably died of what they called “milk fever.” A lot of two year olds died when mamma became pregnant again, in this case my great aunt Maud was the new baby. The culture told the woman that she shouldn’t nurse when she was pregnant and without the knowledge of germs, the baby was given unpasteurized milk, developed severe diarrhea, and died.
