Died in Indianola, Calhoun County, Texas
He was murdered, along with his friend William E Sutton, by Jim and Bill Taylor, cousins, on board the steamer Clinton just because he was a friend and happened to be with Sutton at the time. One of the more than 83 victims of the Sutton-Taylor Feud. They are buried near each other.
His great-great grandfather was Kentucky Governor Gabriel Slaughter.
