John was born in Bedford County, Tennessee, he married Louise Kimbrough in 1851 in Kentucky.
In 1862, at age 33, he enlisted for a 1 year hitch with some mounted unit, but left them as soon as they arrived at their destination. (Presumably at Arkansas Post. In 1863 he signed up for a 3 year hitch with the 12th Texas Cavalry, with whom he served in the Little Rock and Red River Campaigns.
John died in Parker County Texas.
