James Dalton Strong of Lubbock was welcomed in to the Kingdom of Heaven on Sunday, July 5, 2009. He was 89 years of age. Services will be held at the First Baptist Church of Lubbock at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 9, 2009 with burial at Resthaven Cemetery under the direction of Rix Funeral Directors.

He was born on April 7, 1920 in Comyn, Texas to Samuel and Marium Strong. After graduating from Comyn-Theney High School, Dalton entered the United States Army, where he served as a member of the 298th Engineers Combat Battalion until he was honorably discharged in 1945. During his military service, he participated in battles and campaigns in North Africa and Europe, including the D-Day invasion. He was decorated with seven bronze stars, among other commendations. Dalton married Bobbie Lee Pirkle on February 7, 1947, in Carlsbad, N.M. Together, they resided in Lubbock for over 60 years. He was employed as Vice President of Townsend & Strong for 50 years, where he worked along side his brother. Dalton was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and working in his yard. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lubbock and Downtown Bible Class. He was a blessing to everyone that knew him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bobbie; and his sisters, Mamie Pell, Holly Mohon and Willie Caraway.

He is survived by his son, James Dalton Strong, Jr. of Kemah; daughter, Nancy Strong Boyer and husband Chris Boyer of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Megan Boyer of Lubbock, Christopher Boyer of Stillwater, Okla., Justin Strong of Abilene and Clayton Strong of Houston; brother, Sam Strong of Lubbock; and sister, Sarah Dudney of Comanche.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Lubbock; the Alzheimer's Association; or to the giver's choice.

Visitation will be held this evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Rix Funeral Directors, 1901 Broadway, Lubbock, Texas.
