Leon O. Barber Jr. (Popeye) 84, of Sweeny passed away at his home surrounded by his loving family on July 5, 2012. He was born in Pontotoc, Texas to Leon O. Sr. and Laura Waleska Bode Barber. He was an avid outdoors man and was the best husband, father and gramps. He thought the world of his grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at 6 pm at Valley Spring Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Baker Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 am until noon.
Pallbearers are Justin Barber, Travis Barber, Dan Schaefer, Grant Parker, Bob Porter, and Lee Masters. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 67 years, Beth of Sweeny; his children, Scott Barber & wife, Pam of Sweeny and Debra Jolly & husband, Drew of Sweeny; grandchildren, Shannon Schaefer & husband, Dan of Sweeny, Justin Barber & wife, Carolina of New Braunfels, Wendy Parker & husband, Grant of Sweeny, Travis Barber & wife, Tally of Fair Oaks, Laura Jolly of Pearland, and Kristen Barber of Coral Gables, Fla.; great grandchildren, Kyle & Katy Schaefer, Wes & Riley Parker, Madeline & Ryan Barber and Preston & Parker Barber; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
He was a WWII veteran serving in the Army Air Force, a member of the Optimist Club , a member of the First Baptist Church and was a Mason in the Sweeny Chapter.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations be made in Leon's name to the charity of your choice.
