James was born on the family farm in Burleson County, near Caldwell. In 1881 James Cox married Miss Mary Virginia Ellis, who preceded him in death, after nine children, of whom two preceded the couple in death, were born. The family lived in Burleson County until 1889 when they moved to their farm near Markley in Young County. Where he became a member of Bethel Church of Christ in Young County in 1902 and remained faithful to his Christian belief until his death.
