Doyle Lynn (Spider) Clark was born to Doyle (Speck) and Hazel Harwell Clark on June 3, 1935 in Gorman, Texas. He left this world at his Lord’s calling to join Him in Heaven on Friday, September 22, 2017. Funeral services will be held on 2:00 P.M., Monday at the First Baptist Church, Gorman, Texas with burial to follow at Oaklawn Cemetery. Services will be under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home of Gorman.
Spider graduated from Gorman High School in 1953. He received a basketball scholarship to Ranger College for 1954 and 1955. His teammates gave him the nickname of “Spider”, and he has been known by that name ever since. He was often referred to lovingly by his family and friends as “Spider Clark, All-American”.
On May 11, 1956, he married the love of his life, Patsy Rodgers, and they were together for 55 years. When they were first married, he worked for Lone Star Gas and then Texas Electric in Abilene. While there, he worked full time and attended Hardin Simmons University, graduating in 1963. Upon graduation he went to work for HUD (Housing and Urban Development), beginning his career in Ft. Worth then moving to the San Antonio office. He and his wife lived in Comfort, Texas for nearly 40 years, but after his retirement chose to return to their home town of Gorman.
Spider was a sports lover and followed his children and grandchildren in any sport they were playing. He also loved to follow sports in his home town. He has traveled all over Texas watching High School and college sports. During football season, Friday nights were reserved for high school football, but Saturday’s were reserved for the Texas Longhorns. If he wasn’t at the game in Austin, then you knew you could find him cheering on the Longhorns from his favorite chair. He was a lifelong fan and was very proud of the fact that he raised several Longhorns of his own. ‘Hook Em!!
He loved barbequing and spending time with his family and friends. He was a very devoted father, grandfather, and great- grandfather. The most important thing in his life was his relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He loved studying God’s word and preparing a lesson for his Sunday school class. His greatest joy and desire was that his family follow Jesus and trust in His word. He trusted God and knew where he would spend eternity. He loved his family immensely. He always had time for family and friends and was the first to offer care and concern to those in need. He was a member of the Gorman Lions Club.
Spider is survived by his children, Ricky and wife Linda of Salado, Cathy and husband Phil of Ranger, and Robby and wife Beth of Tomball. His grandchildren, Cara (David), Garrett, Corby (Krista), Marissa, Lyndi (Tim), Travis, Ryan, Matthew, Mallorie, and Macie. His great-grandchildren, Corben, Brynna, Griffen, Olivia, and Knox. His brother Tommy and wife Michaelyn. His sister-in-law Glinda and husband Bob, brother-in-law Harold and wife Annette, and numerous nieces and nephews.
was preceded in death by his wife, Patsy, his parents, and his brother, Terry Clark.
To honor Spider’s memory, he and his family ask that donations be made to the building fund of First Baptist Church in Gorman and the Gorman Lions Club.
