Son of John H. Latham and Barbara Malinda Bumgarner. James Monroe Latham married Margaret McDow. Their children are:

James Latham was in the Civil War, Texas Confederate Texas Troop, 31st Regiment, Calvary Hawpe's Regiment (D) at age 18. This Cavalry regiment was assembled at Waco, Texas during the spring of 1862. The unit served in Arkansas, Missour, and the Indian Territory and was dismounted toward the end of 1862. They were later ordered east of the Mississippi River and in the Winter of 1863-64 returned to the Trans-Mississippi Department and remounted.
This cavalry regimen also fought at Poison Spring and Cabin Creek in 1865. They were also included in the surrender to Union Troops in June
