Born circa 1866, probably in Coryell County, Texas. He used the alias G. W. Franks. After the premature death of his wife , Viana E Byler Carver, in 1892, he became restless and turned outlaw in 1896. He first rode with Sam and Tom Ketcham doing hold ups in western New Mexico and eastern Arizona. Some believe that he delivered the fatal shot to famed lawman George Scarborough. After escaping a deadly shoot out in Turkey Creek Canyon in Northern New Mexico, he drifted north and joined the Wild Bunch. He is pictured with Wild Bunch in one of the Old West most famous pictures taken in Ft. Worth, Texas. He received the nickname "News" because he enjoyed reading newspapers that mentioned his name in connection with his outlaw escapades. Carver was killed when he and Ben Kilpatrick, The Tall Texan" and another member of the Wild Bunch, got into a shootout with Sheriff Elijah S. Briant and deputies at Sonora. Carver was shot and died three hours later. Kilpatrick survived until killed with an ice mallet during a train robbery in March of 1912. The headstone was provided by cowboy friends and only marked with the date of his death, April 2, 1901, no names.
