Joel was born on June 10, 1927 in Sanderson, Texas to Melecio Saldivar and Celia Gonzales Saldivar. He was raised in Sanderson and Tlachichila, Mexico. His father sent him to live with his grandparents in Sanderson and encouraged him to join the U.S. military. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII. Following the war, he married Esperanza “Hope” Rodriguez on March 14, 1949 in Sanderson, and they moved to Andrews in 1961. While in Andrews, he had worked for the TXDOT highway department and several gas stations for Clyde Welch and Ed Cook. He retired from working as a mechanic for DA & S Well Service in Andrews. He had attended the Andrews Church of Christ with his family. He loved western shows, find a word, wrestling, and sit around and watch people. He would go to flea markets with his daughters trying to find military medals and memorabilia to replace the ones he had lost over the years. He was very proud that he served in the military and was a lifetime member of the VFW Post #4372 in Odessa. He enjoyed traveling to the VA hospital and clinics, where he would get to visit with other veterans and tell stories. He was proud of his service to his county, so he would encourage his children to be involved in their community and their own families. He was preceded in death by his wife on August 1, 1999, son, David, his parents, 1 brother, and 1 sister.

Joel is survived by his 5 sons, Mike and Betty Saldivar of San Angelo, Joe and Pat Saldivar of Andrews, Manuel Saldivar of New Braunfels, Roy and Kathy Saldivar of New Braunfels, and Edward Saldivar and Andrea Warnke of Andrews, 3 daughters, Susie Mireles of Andrews, Linda and Pete Luna of Andrews, and Valerie Saldivar and Manuel Altamirano of Andrews; 2 brothers, Luis and Amaury Pena, both of San Antonio; 29 grandchildren; 65 great grandchildren; and 4 great great grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Andrews County Veterans Memorial, 700 West Broadway, Andrews, Texas 79714. www,mcnettfuneralhome.com
