Melvin Dean "Buck" Cox, 66, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013, in Temple. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 16, in Mart Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Gurley officiating.
Dean was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Ross and Nellie Cox. He grew up in Watt, Texas. After graduating from Axtell High School, he joined the U.S. Navy, which he served from June 1964 to November 1967. He fought in the Vietnam War as an E4 and in 1966 served in the Philippines. He was stationed in the Pacific Ocean aboard the USS Porterfield DD-682 Fletcher-Class Destroyer as a RM3. On September 23, 1977, he married Helen Ruth Freeman. From 1974 to 2003 he worked for Wells Cargo as a sheet metal supervisor.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Davis; and his infant brother, Floyd Wesley Cox.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Cox; his son, Dempsey Wells; daughters, Jana A. Harvey, Janet L. Harper, and Becky Sue Riggins; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; brother, Ross Cox; nephew, George Davis; and many other nephews, nieces, and friends.
