Born in South Carolina
Came to Texas June 1836 with Captain John Shackleford's Red Rovers. Landed at Copano Bay. Joined Colonel James Fannin's command. Wounded in the defeat at Coletto Creek and taken prisons at Goliad on March 20, 1836. A week later the Mexicans shot and killed more than 300 prisoners. Cooper and a handful of others escaped. For two weeks they traveled at night in enemy territory to reach Texian forces at the bravos River. He lived in Hays and Colorado counties before farming with his stepson, Samuel Stoudenmier. in Llano and San Saba Counties.
