Robert Downman Abel Jr., 86, of Waco, passed away Sunday, Jan. 1, 2012, at Ridgecrest Retirement and Health Care. Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Waco Memorial Mausoleum Chapel with the Rev. Richard Roland officiating. Entombment will follow. Visitation will be 1 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 5, at Waco Memorial Mausoleum Chapel.
Robert was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Robert and Lucile Abel Sr. He was a 1942 graduate of Waco High School. Robert enjoyed a successful real estate career in Houston with his wife, Shirley, then retired to Waco in 1997. Both were active in the Big Band Dance Club and the organization of several Waco High reunions.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Jean Abel; and sister, Betty Porter.
He is survived by his son, Tom Abel and wife, Laura, of Pflugerville; daughter, Terry Lynn Abel, of Houston; grandchildren, Hunter Riley Abel and Lauren Nicole Abel, of Pflugerville; sister, Laura Jane Ruby, of Tyler; several nieces and nephews; and many other family members and friends.
