George Simon Abood, 92, of Lorena, went to be with the Lord Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at a local hospital in Waco. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Waco Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 17, at Waco Memorial Funeral Home.
George was raised in Kearney, Neb., the fourth of eight children born to the late Camel and Rose Abood. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1942. While serving in the military, he met his future wife, Billie Boleman, at the USO in San Antonio. Shortly thereafter, on March 10, 1944, they were married. After his discharge, they moved to Waco and had three children. After 35 years, George retired from General Tire in Waco. In 1972, George and Billie moved to their farm in Lorena where they began their much enjoyed retirement and raised cattle for over 39 years. George's garden was legendary. Family and friends enjoyed his watermelons, tomatoes, cucumbers and squash. Whether you wanted it or not, you were always sent home after Sunday lunch with a bag of his garden bounty. For the past two years, he spent much of his time at the Family Y swimming and visiting with friends.
George was preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years; sisters, Emma Kalush and Lula Fortino; and brothers, Roy Abood and Phil Abood.
He is survived by his daughter, Sherry Gamble and husband, Sherman, of Hewitt; sons, Ken Abood and wife, KC, of Austin, and Gary Abood and wife, Marsha, of Waco; grandchildren, Chris, Nicole, Brianna and Hanna; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Dorothy Bettar and Jenny Bergt; brother, Nick Abood; and many other loving family members and friends.
