Denver City - J E Herring, 59, former water superintendent and city superintendent here, died Monday afternoon of a heart attack at his home in Kingsland.

Herring moved to Kingsland a year ago after 29 years in Denver City. He was water superintendent for most of his municipal career, and supervised construction of the first city owned water and sewage disposal plants here.

He was named city superintendent in July 1967 and retired April 1, 1968.
Herring helped organize the volunteer fire department here and served on it, part of the time as chief, until his retirement. He and his wife, Rosemary, also owned and operated the La Vista Lodge motel here for years.

Herring was a member of Denver City Masonic Lodge 1278 and of the First Methodist Church. He was born in Alabama and reared at Seagraves.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs Jerry Eugenia London of Los Alamos, NM; two brothers, Ellis of Andrews and Omar of Odessa; four sisters, Mrs Aurella Adams of Odessa, Mrs Eula Ward of Buchanan Dam, Mrs Ollie McDaniel of Kingsland and Mrs May Tripp of Odessa; and a granddaughter.

Services were to be at 3pm today at First Methodist Church, with the Rev J Alvis Cooley, pastor, officiating. Burial with Masonic rites was to be in Denver City Memorial Park under direction of Singleton Funeral Home. Source: Singleton Funeral Home.

Friends and family will gather to celebrate the life of Rose Mary Herring, 90, of Lubbock from 11 a.m. until noon Friday, July 30, 2010 at Lake Ridge Chapel and Memorial Designers. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. in Denver City Memorial Park, Denver City. Mrs. Herring died Tuesday, July 27, 2010.

Rosie was born April 22, 1920 in Klondike to the late James Samuel and Lucy Ellen (Robnett) Henderson. She graduated from Springlake High School and attended Texas Tech University and Draughn's Business College. She married Waldo Drake and later moved from Texas to California during WWII. After the war, they moved back to Texas and Waldo was killed in a plane crash. Later, Rosie met and married J.E. Herring, and he died in 1969. She worked as a bookkeeper and had a business out of her home for many years. Rosie was a Methodist.

She is survived by a stepdaughter, Jerry London; eight nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents and husbands, Rosie was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters. Source: Lakeridge Chapel and Memorial Designers
