March 14, 1833 - June 12, 1900
He married JULIA ANN ZUNDEL 1854 in Payson City, Utah, daughter of JOHANNES ZUNDEL and ANNA LAUTENSCHLAGER.
Came to Texas in 1847 at the age of thirteen. In 1881 he opened the first dry goods store in Italy. He became partners with his brother about two years later and a Mr. Hamlett joined this partnership in 1884. He was the Senior member of Couch Bros. & Hamlett of Italy, Texas.
He gave his occupation as "Land Lord" in the 1900 census. According to James Bently Couch, a descendant living in 2008, he was the senior partner in Couch Brothers & Hamlett of Italy. They apparently owned several businesses and/or leased buildings to businesses. That same year, his younger brother James Clark Couch listed his occupation as "Merchant".
