Edgar V. Early, 88, of Troy, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2007, in a local hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home Chapel in Temple. Burial will follow at Robert's Cemetery in Troy. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 16, at the funeral home.

Edgar was born in August 1918, in Park Springs, Texas, to James H. and Roberta (Messer) Early. Edgar came to Troy in a covered wagon with his father at the age of eight. He joined the Methodist Church at Cego, in 1938 at age 18. Edgar married Catherine Liles of Durango on Jan. 15, 1942.

Edgar served in the National Guard at Temple for several years and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1943-1945, earning a bronze star and other numerous medals.

Edgar worked for South West Stone Company of Bridgeport and was a mechanic in several shops, he also owned his own service station in Bridgeport. After moving to Central Texas, Edgar worked at Fort Hood and was then transferred to the Veteran's Hospital in Temple and worked in the engineer shop for many years, retiring in February of 1981 after 30 years of service. Edgar also worked as a mechanic at International Harvester. Edgar always strived to do better. He tried each day to do one extra job. That was his motto. He said never to look back, but look forward and try to gain an extra notch each day.

Survivors include children, Arlin "Butch" Early and wife, Gloria of Mart, Texas, Linda Franklin and husband, Ben of Smithville, Tenn., Sharron McMullen and husband, Michael of Troy; grandchildren, Michael McMullen and wife, Sarah of Magnolia, Misty Carol Franklin, of Smithville, Tenn., and Bobby, Dianna, Debbie, Dale, Tracy, Billy, James, Jeff and John Wright.
