Johnny Burnett, 87, went to be with his beloved Lord on September 27, 2019. Born to Elmer Allen Burnett and Maury Wills Burnett on June 18, 1932 in Van Zandt County Texas. Joaozinho “little Johnny”, as he was called by his friends, students and colleagues in Brazil where he served the Lord for 32 years, dedicated his life as a Pastor, Music Director, Education Director and Administrator in churches in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Brazil and Tanzania. He and his wife of 63 years, Barbara Ann Burnett served the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention for 34 years working in Belem, Para, Brazil and throughout the Amazon Basin and in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Johnny and Barbara are members of Trinity Baptist Church in Texarkana AR.
Johnny graduated from Wayland College with a Bachelor of Arts with an emphasis in Religious Studies and English (1953) and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary with a Master of Religious Education (1956), Master of Divinity (1973) and Doctor of Philosophy (1994). In 1992, he was awarded as Honorary Citizen of the city of Belem, Brazil where he dedicated most of his career.
Johnny is survived by his wife, Barbara; four children, Barry (Sonia) Burnett, Bruce (Sheri) Burnett, Bret (Claudia) Burnett, Belinda (Jim) Hutcheson; grandson-in-law, Curtis Stuesse; nine grandchildren, Erik (Mindy) Burnett, Megan (Tommy) Burnett Squires, Amanda (Ryan) Burnett Bergsma, Andrea Burnett, Gabriela Burnett, Brianna Burnett, Katie Hutcheson, Nathan Hutcheson, Andrew Hutcheson; and 2 great-grandchildren, Jameson Burnett, Hadley Bergsma. He was preceded in death by one granddaughter Kiley Burnett Stuesse, his parents, his brother Argus Burnett and his sister Willie May Fisher.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Johnny Burnett’s honor can be made to Heifer International or the International Mission Board for the work in Equatorial Brazil.
The family will receive friends at Texarkana Funeral Home, Arkansas Friday, October 4, 2019 from 6:00 to 7:30 P. M.
A celebration of Bro. Johnny's life will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Trinity Baptist Church with Rev. Charlie Elrod officiating.
Burial will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home, Arkansas.
