SPEARMAN — Alton Roy Ellsworth, 87, of Spearman died Thursday, July 26, 2012.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery in Spearman. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mr. Ellsworth was born Sept. 18, 1924, in Blackwell, Okla. He married Peggy Gabel on Jan. 12, 1947, in Amarillo. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 in World War II.

Mr. Ellsworth was a former Spearman City Alderman. He served as a board member of the Hansford County Hospital District and owned Ellsworth Oil/Alton's Gulf from 1952 to 1986.

He was a member of Spearman Masonic Lodge and the Gideons International Ministry. Mr. Ellsworth was a deacon at First Baptist Church, a longtime member of Spearman Lions Club and served as a Big Brother. He and his wife, Peggy, were Spearman Citizens of the Year in 2000.

Mr. Ellsworth loved to work in his flower beds. He had coached the Lions Club Yankees Little League baseball team, and he loved to watch his grandchildren and great-grandchildren play Little League baseball. He loved to sing in the First Baptist Church choir.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Ellsworth of Spearman; a son, Gary Ellsworth and wife Jan of Spearman; a daughter, Gayle Smith and husband Archie of Spearman; a brother, Wayne Ellsworth of Spearman; four granddaughters, Kallie de Vries and husband Erik of Fort Worth and Jana Knowlton and husband Chad, Kacee Ivy and husband Josh and Jennifer Lozano and husband Ramon, all of Spearman; a grandson, Brenton Hughes of Spearman; a brother-in-law, Robert Gabel and wife Martha of Amarillo; and six great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church, 123 S. Bernice St., Spearman, TX 79081; or Hansford Hospice, 707 S. Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.
