MEMBER OF PROMINENT MAYSFIELD FAMILY BURIED AT LITTLE RIVER
James Bruce Mayes, 41, passed away October 26, 1951, in New Orleans, La. He suffered a heart attack shortly before he died. He was born September 8, 1910 at Maysfield, Texas, son of the late Robert Bruce and Kittie Newton Mayes, who were pioneer residents of that community.
Mr. Mayes maternal grandfather was the late Re. James Knox Polk Newton, who was a former minister at both the Cameron and Maysfield Presbyterian churches.
Maysfield was named after his grandfather Robert Bruce Mayes who was one of the first settlers in the community.
Mr. Mayes graduated from the Yoe High School in 1905 and completed a business course at the Tyler Commercial College the following year. He attended Tulane University where he received his certificate as a Certified Public Accountant.
For a number of years he was employed by the Affiliated National Hotels, serving for four years as income auditor at the Hotel New Yorker in New York City. He later resigned to accept a position as chief auditor at the De Soto Hotel in New Orleans.
Eight years prior to his death he became secretary of the J. B. Levert Land Company in New Orleans, the position he held at the time of his death.
He united with the Maysfield Presbyterian Church at an early age of which he was still a member at the time of his death. He was married in June 1935 to Miss Una Mae Richard of Lake Charles, La.
A short service was held Friday, October 26, at 3 p. m. at the Schoen Funeral Home at New Orleans by De. Land, minister of First Central Presbyterian Church in New Orleans.
Funeral services were held at the Maysfield Presbyterian church Sunday, October 28, with Rev. John C. Solomon officiating, assisted by Rev. Excell Coon, student supply pastor at the Church and Rev. William Newton, minister of the Lott Presbyterian Church.
Interment at Little River Cemetery with Marek-Burns directing the arrangements.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. J. B. Mayes, one brother, R. B. Mayes; five sisters, Miss Neil Mayes, Mrs. Helen Peel, Mrs. Albert Triggs, Jr., Mrs. Charlie Bailey and Mrs. O. E. Barry.
He is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
