Funeral services for R. B. Mayes were held Sunday afternoon at four o'clock from the family residence at Maysfield with interment in Little River Cemetery.
R. B. Mayes, 49, died at 2 p. m. Saturday January 29, 1928 following a week of illness from pneumonia. He was a native of Milam county being born and reared at Maysfield, the son of Mr. Mrs. Bruce Mayes, pioneer residents of that community. He was born January 7, 1879.
The death of Mr. Mayes brings sorrow to the hearts of many friends and acquaintances in Milam county where he spent the days of his life, a citizen who contributed much to the progress of the county in every way.
The funeral was held from the residence with services in the Presbyterian church at Maysfield conducted by the Presbyterian minister, from Calvert assisted by Rev. H. G. Kenney of Cameron. From the church the cortege, one of the largest ever attending a funeral accompanied the body to the cemetery at Little River where burial was made.
Deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. R. B. Mayes, who was before her marriage Miss Kittie Belle Newton of Maysfield; Helen Mayes who is now Mrs. Homer Peel, William, Lois, J. B. Mayes, Vera, Bob and R. B. Mayes, Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. J. H. Sapp of Cameron, Mrs. H. Hartsfield of Buckholts and Mrs. H. A. Bozeman of Lorenzo, Texas.
Pallbearers were as follows: Guy T. Newton, John C. Newton of Houston; H. G. Newton, Lamar Newton, Roy Newton, all brothers of Mrs. Mayes and Forrest Smith.
