Rickey, the only child of Fred and Awilda Jergenson, was born in Ochiltree County, Texas. Jergenson arrived in Viet Nam on January 15, 1970 and was assigned to the Combined Action Program, where Marines were assigned to live in the villages and work with local forces to defend the villages. He was killed in Quang Nam, Viet Nam. While on patrol, Rickey and two other service men detonated a mine while crossing a mine field. All three men died from their multiple wounds.
