Betty Ruth Hines, 84, resident of Texarkana, Texas, died from kidney failure due to cancer at St. Michael's Hospital on Monday, February 14, 2011. Her youngest son, Dirck Hines and close friend Nancy Adams, were with her at the time of her death.
Betty was born in El Paso, Texas, on August 23, 1927. She was an orphan raised as an only child in Pasadena, California, by her aunt, Agnes Leo Pard, and Agnes's mother. While at school in California in 1949, she met Herbert A. (Andy) Hines, an enlisted man in the U.S. Navy. On January 21, 1950, they married and remained together until Herbert's death on February 14, 2010.
Betty earned an Associate of Arts Degree from Grossmont Community College in San Diego, CA, a Bachelors of Applied Arts and Sciences and a Master of Science degree from Texas A&M University, Texarkana. She was the founder and Executive Director of the Bi-State Women's Center, known as the Mable Bryan Morriss Center. A longtime resident of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Fleet Reserve Association and a lifelong Republican. She was a member of the Bethel Seventh Day Adventist Church, Texarkana, TX.
Betty is survived by her four children, Thomas Hines of Sacramento, CA, Bettina Bradley of Lynwood, WA, Daniel Hines of Lake Stevens, WA, and Dirck Hines of Santa Rosa, CA. Her six grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, Grace Marie Chittock of Oceanside, CA, Anna Rainville and Christopher Rainville of Grass Valley, CA, Kayemarie Tomlin-Hines of Sebastopol, CA, Virginia Hines of Lake Stevens, WA, and Andrew Hines of Lake Stevens, WA, and greatgrandchild Aiden Chittock of Oceanside, CA.
A private family interment will take place on February 21, 2011 at Hillcrest Memorial Cemetery.
A memorial service and reception for all of Betty's friends is planned for 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 21, 2011 at Hands On Texarkana, The New Volunteer Center, 1915 Olive Street, Texarkana, TX 75503.
