Gerald Simmons Childers, 84, passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016, in Amarillo. A Memorial Service is scheduled for 11 o’ clock in the morning on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Sunray Baptist Church with Rev. Brent Childers officiating and Bruce Broxson assisting. Private interment will be in Lane Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6-8 o’ clock in the evening on Tuesday at the funeral home in Dumas. Arrangements are entrusted to Morrison Funeral Directors.

Gerald Childers was born on February 25, 1931, to A.F. and Geraldine Childers in Dalhart, TX. He graduated from Dumas High School. Gerald married Beverly Reynolds April 22, 1950; she preceded him in death in 1974. After her passing, he married Phyllis Richardson in 1977; she also preceded him in death in 2005.

Gerald started working for Northern Natural Gas Company in Sunray and was transferred to Lincoln, KS, Eldorado, TX and finally to Liberal, KS. He was a longtime member of the Liberal Elks, member of the Gold Wing Road Riders Association and rode with the Two Tired Motorcycle Club of Liberal.

He was an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys and the Liberal BJ’s baseball team. Gerald volunteered many hours transporting veterans from Liberal to the VA in Amarillo. He spent his life always in service to others and those in need.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers: Larry and Dale; first wife: Beverly Reynolds and second wife: Phyllis Richardson.

Gerald is survived by daughter: Hollie Childers; son: Jerry Childers and wife Donna; daughter: Debbie Corse, all of Amarillo; siblings: Faye Cartrite and husband Kent of Sunray, Jo Palmer of Las Cruces, NM and Brent Childers and wife Leslie of Amarillo; two sisters-in-law: Linda Childers and Frances Childers both of Dalhart; eight grandchildren: Randall Smith, Aaron Smith and wife Ginger, Tisha Thurman and husband Todd, Amy Howe and husband Justin, Stacy Cantwell and husband Curt; Brady Corse and wife Joy; Barry Corse and wife Dianne, Brandon Corse and wife Susie; and 21 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Brenda Christy’s Comfort Cottage and caregivers: Jackie, Lori and Loretta.

The family suggests memorials be to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2200 W 7th St, Amarillo, TX 79106 or the American Heart Association, PO Box 15186, Austin, TX 78761.
