After his discharge as a sergeant in 1946, he returned to Floydada and worked as a bookkeeper for his father-in-law, H.G. Parker, at the Parker Furniture Store. A second Parker's Furniture Store was opened in 1948 in Lockney, and Hershel became manager in 1952 and owner in 1970. He operated the store until his retirement in 1993.
