*Obituary for Mary Ellen
SPEARMAN - Mary Ellen Vernon, 95, died Sunday, March 15, 2009.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hansford Cemetery with Jimmy Greene officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Ellen was born Nov. 21, 1913, to George W. and Lottie Stewart Francis on a ranch near Riverview School south of Erick and Texola in Beckham County, Okla. She had lived in the area since 1926, moving from Erick. She attended school in Erick. In 1926, she moved to the Kimball Community north of Spearman in Hansford County. She married Jake Vernon on Sept. 15, 1932, in Guymon, Okla., in a ceremony performed by the late Dr. Fred Daily's father, a justice of the peace. Jake preceded her in death in 2000 after 67 years together.

She was a member of First Christian Church and CWF, having served in the choir and as a youth fellowship sponsor. She was a charter member of the Gruver-kimball Home Demonstration Club. She was a wonderful wife, mother and homemaker who enjoyed playing piano and gardening, especially growing roses.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and four half-brothers and half-sisters.

Survivors include a son, Jimmie R. Vernon and wife Kay of Spearman; a daughter, Mary Francis Fewell and husband Bernard of Canyon and Spearman; two grandsons, Jim Vernon and wife Kelly of Carrollton and Lynn Vernon and wife Sandra of Friendswood; a granddaughter, Shari Skaggs and husband Kevin of Argyle; two step granddaughters, Kim Gallop and Leigh Standiford, both of Amarillo; a step grandson, Craig Fewell of Midland; and seven great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to Hansford Hospice, 707 Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081; or First Christian Church.
