CLAYTON, N.M. - Benjamin Douglas Wheeler, 88, formerly of Clayton died Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Hansford Cemetery in Spearman, Texas, with Fred Shieldknight and Roger Odegaard officiating. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Ben was born Aug. 18, 1924, in Reydon, Okla., to Ben and Sarah Walker Wheeler. He grew up in the Vinita, Okla., area and worked in farming and cattle with his father. Benjamin served in the 35th Construction Battalion of the Navy. He joined the military in 1944 when he was 20 years old. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Campaign Ribbon, and an expert rifle marksman medal. He was honorably discharged April 4, 1946.

Ben worked with his brothers ranching until he married Leota Florence Osborn on Sept. 15, 1949, in Cleora, Okla. They moved to Texas and lived in the Pampa, Texas, area to work on Wiley Reynolds Ranch and Flowers Ranch. They also worked various ranches in Colorado and New Mexico, where they retired to raise their own cattle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four sisters, Mary Louise Rich, Tilla Highland, Arlene Billings and Nanola Alice Allen; and three brothers, Leo, Dow and Joe Wheeler.

Survivors include three sons, Ben and wife Diana of Wewoka, Okla., John and wife Susan of Stratford, Texas, and Steve Wheeler and wife Cathy of Kenton, Okla.; two daughters, Patty Wheeler of Goodnight, Texas, and Brenda Shieldknight and husband Fred of Spearman; 13 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

SPEARMAN - Leota Florence Wheeler, 78, died Thursday, April 14, 2011.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Spearman Church of Christ with the Rev. Larry McCollum, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home of Spearman.

Mrs. Wheeler was born Oct. 5, 1932, in Cleora, Okla., to Benjamin Thomas and Mary Hatti Imogene Osborne. She grew up in Vinita, Okla.

She married Benjamin Douglas Wheeler Sr. on Sept. 15, 1949, in Vinita. In their early married life, they moved to Pampa, where she was a rancher's wife and homemaker. Later, the family moved to Spearman on the Flowers Ranch. Again, they moved to Colorado and Clayton, N.M., where she worked with her husband on a ranch. She and her husband, Ben, retired after 65 years in Boise City, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin and Mary Osborn; three brothers, Clyde Osborn, Tom Osborn and Richard Henson; and a sister, Louise Titvl.

Survivors include her husband, Benjamin Douglas Wheeler of Boise City, Okla.; a sister, Lorene White of Vinita; a brother, John L. and wife Flora Osborn of Edmond, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Colene Wheeler of Higgins and Jerry Osborn of Tulsa, Okla.; her child-ren, Ben Wheeler and wife Diane of Wewoka, Okla., John Wheeler and wife Susan of Stratford, Patty Wheeler of Claude, Brenda Shieldknight of Spearman, and Steve Wheeler and wife Kathy of Springfield, Colo.; her grandchildren, Colby Wheeler and wife Sandi of Liberal, Kan., Clay Wheeler of Lubbock, Jennifer Poling and husband Trent of Clayton, Kelly Harper and husband Quentin of Gruver, Stephanie Moore of Claude, Wes Wheeler and wife Krista of Tahlequah, Okla., Quenten Shieldknight and wife Kristin of Spearman, Ricky Armstrong and wife Randi of White Deer, Clara Simmons and husband Chris of Spearman, Kevin Wheeler of Scott City, Kan., Mark Wheeler and wife Leah of Gladstone, N.M., and Sara and Christine Wheeler, both of Springfield; and 14 great-grandchildren.
