LOCKNEY - Melvin Cooper, 82, died Saturday, Aug. 15, 1998, at Fayetteville, Ark.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in the First Baptist Church with the Rev. Harold Abney, pastor, and the Rev. Gene Hawkins, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church of Floydada, officiating. Burial will be in Lockney Cemetery by Moore-Rose-White Funeral Home.

Mr. Cooper was born in Traskwood, Ark. He attended school in Quitaque. He married Edith McDaniel in 1936 at Turkey, Texas. They moved to Lockney in 1943 from Portales, N.M. They moved to Prairie Grove, Ark. this moth from Lockney.

Mr. Cooper was a former member of Masonic Lodge 867 and of the First Baptist Church. He was a retired mechanic and farmer.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melba Elaine Cooper Hardy in 1984.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Melvin Wayne Cooper of Bullard; seven brothers, Howard Cooper of Ruidoso, N.M., Jack Cooper of Pima, Ariz., Ross Cooper and Glen Cooper, both of Lockney, Dick Cooper of San Angelo, Lee Cooper of Austin and Pete Cooper of Jal, N.M.; four sisters, Mae Chandler of Lockney, Anne Lumpkin of Amarillo, Vera Wood of Ruidoso and Wilma Van Meter of Hobbs, N.M.; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family requests memorials be to the Elaine Hardy Scholarship Fund c/o the First National Bank of Lockney, 201 N. Main, Lockney, Texas 79241.
