The land was purchased for the purpose of establishing a school, church, and cemetery by P. L. Habermacher, Miles J. Allen, and J. S. Dabney in 1903.
The Hartsville school was a 2 room building that was used until 1939 when students were consolidated with Wallis school.
The Hartsville Church of Christ continued meeting on the site until 1949 when the church building was moved to Sealy where it is still in use today. The Sealy Church of Christ assumed ownership of the site in 1978 and managed it until November 2001, when it was transferred to the Hartsville Cemetery Association. In July 2001, the Hartsville Cemetery Association was formed for the purpose of owning and maintaining the cemetery.
Members of the board of directors are descendants of the original owners of the property.
