Violet Lurline Dawes Arthur was born to Vernon and Rita Baker Dawes on Dec. 3, 1918, in Payne County, Okla. She was the oldest of five children, Russell, Leland, Jack Dawes, and Ruby Wooten, all of whom preceded her in death. Violet graduated from Agra High School in Oklahoma then moved to Slaton, Texas, to live with grandparents, John and Lula Baker. She met Joe C. Arthur of Southland and they were married Nov. 24, 1937. After moving many times around Texas, Amarillo, Clarendon, Mineola, Littlefield, Lubbock, Dallas, and Plano, she came back to Lubbock in 1985. She has been a very active member of First Baptist Church and the Faith Sunday School Class. During these twenty-eight years, she enjoyed many Bible Studies and Precept Bible Courses and served several offices within her Sunday School Class. She enjoyed all of the activities offered at Grand Court Lubbock, beginning May 2007, until falling in her apartment on June 8, 2013. After that accident she was very hesitant to even try to walk. Memorial service is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at 10 a.m. in the First Baptist Church with Bro John Ballard officiating. Inurnment will follow in Slaton Cemetery Saturday afternoon.
