He joined the Army and served with the cavalry before World War II. During World War II, he was a combat infantryman and served with the 29th Ranger Division, which spearheaded the invasion of France at Omaha Beach.
At the end of the European war, he served briefly with occupation forces in Germany.
He left the service for a brief time after the war but rejoined the newly established Air Force in 1947 and was assigned to the Strategic Air Command.
He served in Korea during the war there and later was attached to a Military Assistance Group in Japan until 1956.
After a brief period in the United States, he was assigned to Greenland and later to a base in Missouri before his retirement in 1960 at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin.
