James Collins is known to have been born in Kentucky; his parents identity is unknown.

James Collins reportedly arrived in Dallas Co., TX, before 1850; he enlisted in Co. "E", 18th Texas Cavalry (Darnell's) when it was organized in Dallas Co., in early spring, 1862 … serving under command of Capt. William M. Allison. The regiment was ordered to Arkansas where it was subsequently captured at Arkansas Post in Jan., 1863. After being exchanged, the unit was consolidated with other units and re-entered the conflict in the Army of Tennessee at the Battle of Chickamauga (TN) in September, 1863. James was wounded at Chickamauga, losing an arm; as a consequence, he was excused from further service to the Confederacy in March, 1864.

After his discharge, James returned to Dallas Co. where he married Nancy Emmeline Hughs, 1869, a war widow with three small children. This marriage produced (at least) two children: Molly Collins (1871) and Hannah Collins (1873).
