Services for E.J. Pope, 89, longtime resident of Abernathy will be 2 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at Abernathy Church of Christ with David Bennett and Steve Gauntt officiating. Burial will follow in Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy.

Mr. Pope died at his residence Saturday, September 20, 2008.

He was born January 17, 1919 in Hillsboro. He married Wilma Motheral on December 23, 1938 in Abernathy.

E. J. served in the Army during WWII. He farmed and was an original owner of the Tuco Gin. He was a member of the Church of Christ, Downtown Bible Class, served as director of South Plains Telephone Co-op for 30 years, was a member of Hale County ASCS committee for over 20 years, and a member of American Legion. He was named honorary Chapter Farmer for the local FFA, recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as Farm Family of the year in 1974, and the Abernathy Project Show was dedicated to him in 1986.

Survivors include his wife, Wilma Pope; two sons, Charles Pope; Milton and wife Angela Pope; daughter, Karen Waits, all of Abernathy; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorial contributions be sent to the building fund at Church of Christ, Box 290, Abernathy, Tx 79311, or to Abernathy Cemetery Assoc., Box 59, Abernathy, Tx 79311.

Wilma Pope, 92, of Abernathy, TX passed away peacefully Saturday evening, February 2, 2013 surrounded by her children.

She was born May 21, 1920 to Ralph and Agnes (Vernon) Motheral in Olustee, OK. The Motheral family moved to the Cooper Community when Wilma was young then on to Abernathy, where she graduated from Abernathy High School in 1938. She met and married her classmate and love of her life, E. J. Pope, December 23, 1938.

They were engaged in farming except for the years E. J. served in the Army during WWII. Wilma moved her two young sons to California to be close to E. J.'s base. She was a devoted Christian wife and mother and lifetime member of the Church of Christ in Abernathy.

Wilma is preceded in death by her husband, E. J., her parents Ralph and Agnes Motheral, 2 sisters, Imogene Shires and Wynelle Pope and one brother, Bill Motheral. Wilma is survived by 3 children, sons, Charles and Milton (Angela) and daughter Karen Waits all of Abernathy, 10 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren, 3 brothers, Donald (Billie) of Kress, TX, Lawrence and R. K. (P. J.) all of Palestine, TX. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, February 5, 2013, in the Church of Christ in Abernathy with David Bennett officiating. Visitation will be held at Abell Funeral Home Monday evening from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Burial will follow in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX.
