*Obituary for Vera
Services for Vera Hacker Pope, 95, of Abernathy, TX were held at 10:00 am Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in the First Baptist Church with Rev. John Lowrie, officiating. Burial followed services in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy. Mrs. Pope died on Sunday, June 15, 2003, in Lubbock, TX.

Vera was born February 23, 1908 near Hart, TX to the pioneer family of Jerry and Cora Hacker. The Hacker family later moved to Plainview, TX where Vera graduated from Plainview High School and attended Wayland Baptist College. It was there that she met and married J.O. "Bill" Pope on December 22, 1928. Vera and Bill moved to Lubbock in the early 1930's. Vera was very active in the First Baptist Church of Lubbock, serving as superintendent of the Junior Sunday School Department for many years. The center of her social activity was the 1939 Study Club. In the 1950's, Vera helped Bill establish an automobile parts business in Earth, TX. In 1956, they moved to Abernathy, TX to establish Pope's Parts Place.

Vera was preceded in death by her husband on March 27, 1990, and her grandson Mark Pope on March 19, 1985. She is survived by her children, Anita Jean Carlson of Portland, OR, and James Pope and wife Wilma of Lubbock, TX. She is also survived by two grandchildren, Jana Pope and her husband Eddy Hogge of Carrollton, TX, and Dale Bea of Lubbock, TX and three great-grandchildren, Caitlin Hogge and Jamie Hogge of Carrollton and Aidan Bea of Lubbock. Family suggests memorials be sent to the First Baptist Church, B & I Fund, 411 7th Street, Abernathy, TX 79311. www.abellfuneralhome.com
