Rosary was recited for Gilbert Salinas, Sr. 83, of Lubbock, TX and formerly of Abernathy, TX at 7:00 pm Thursday, January 22, 2009 in St. Isidore Catholic Church with Rev. Jacob Puthumarambil officiating. The funeral mass was celebrated at 10:00 am Friday, January 23, 2009, in the same church with the same officiant. Burial followed services in the Abernathy Cemetery under the direction of Abell Funeral Home of Abernathy, TX. Mr. Salinas died Tuesday, January 20, 2009, in Lubbock, TX.

He was born in Bee County, TX on July 7, 1925 to Regino and Juanita (Puentes) Salinas.

He served in the United States Army during WWII, from 1943 until 1945 serving in Japan with honor and pride.

He married Juanita Garcia in September of 1944 and she preceded him in death in October of 1956. In 1960 he married Barbara Clay and she preceded him in death in 1968. He married Maria Mojica in January of 1973 and she preceded him in death in August of 2008. Mr. Salinas was preceded in death by 2 sons, Eddie Wayne and Gilbert Frank Salinas, 3 brothers, Regino, Santiago and Rafael Salinas, 2 sisters, Vicenta Casarez and Esperanza Garcia and a granddaughter, Leticia (Tisha) Gonzales.

He devoted his life raising his family and farming until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of St. Isidore Catholic Church, and later became a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lubbock, TX.

He is survived by 4 sons, Gilbert and his wife Josie of Abernathy, TX, Raymond and his wife Grace of Lubbock, TX, Michael and wife Michelle of Jacksonville, FL, and Jimmy and wife Kelly of Houston, TX, 6 daughters, Margaret Montemayor and husband Jimmy of Beeville, TX, Jane Moralez and husband Hector of Shallowater, TX, Esmeralda Castilleja and husband Tony of Cotton Center, TX, Lucy Gonzales and her husband Rocky, Sylvia Mojica and her husband Jimmy and Mary Sue Ramos and her husband Jason all of Lubbock, TX. He is also survived by 4 brothers, Alejandro, Mike, Domingo and Juan Salinas, 2 sisters, Aurora Perez and Olivia Lopez, 21 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter. www.abellfuneralhome.com
