SERVICE HELD HERE FOR FORMER MAYOR
Bassel Wilson, 66, former mayor of Cameron and owner of the Milam Motel, died Wednesday in an Arlington, Va., hospital of a heart attack he suffered a week ago while visiting relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilson had been visiting U. S. Rep. and Mrs. Jack Brooks of Beaumont in McLean, Va. Mrs. Brooks is Mr. Wilson's stepdaughter.
Mr. Wilson was born in Bell County and served as mayor of Cameron from 1958 to 1950 and from 1964 to 1968. He owned the Milam Motel for 12 years and previously had owned Wilson Jewelers, the Wilson Mill and Elevator, and Wilson Produce.
He was a past director of the Cameron Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Cameron Rotary Club, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Cameron. He was also a member of Knights of Pythias.
Wilson was active in Cameron's urban renewal program, was instrumental in building Cameron Airpark and organized the first Cameron Little League organization, and was a past president of the group.
He was active in the Cameron March of Dimes, the United Fund, and the Milam County Cancer Society. He served as delegate to numerous Milam County and state Democratic conventions for more than 20 years, was active in several gubernatorial campaigns and was treasurer of the Milam County Kennedy-Johnson campaign in 1960.
Funeral was at 2 p. m. Friday in the First Baptist Church in Cameron with the Rev. Vernon Dietrich and the Rev. L. C. Reece officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery in Cameron.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Inez Wilson of Cameron; three sons, Herndon B. Wilson of Irving, Frank C. Wilson of Fort Worth, and David V. Wilson of Lufkin; two stepsons, Glenn Collins of Tyler and Carter Collins of Midlothian; one daughter, Mrs. Virginia Lucas of Bryan; one step-daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Brooks of McLean, Va.; One brother, John J. Wilson of Fort Worth; two sisters, Mrs. Mae Evans of Corpus Christi and Mrs. Francis H. Jack III of Alexandria, Va.; and 17 grandchildren.
