BORGER, Oct. 3 - Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m., today in the First Baptist Church of Stinnett for Elmer Bacchus, 99, believed to be the oldest resident of Hutchinson County.
The Rev. L.M. Griffin, pastor, officiated. Burial was in Stinnett Cemetery.
Mr. Bacchus, a resident of Stinnett since 1939, died shortly after 11 a.m. Wednesday in North Plains Hospital, after a short illness.
He was born in West Virginia. He was graduated from Morgantown University in West Virginia.
He later taught in Colorado, Indian Territory (now, Oklahoma), New Mexico and Idaho. He married Miss Reta Graham at Blackfoot, Idaho, in 1901.
After his retirement from teaching he joined several Americans who attempted to start a colony near Tampico, Mexico. The ranching venture ended when a revolution broke out and the Americans were forced to sell their property.
Mr. Bacchus served as a deputy land commissioner during the Woodrow Wilson administration. Also, he was mayor of Lefors and had served on the Lefors school board before moving to Stinnett.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Mrs. E.O. Van Winkle of Avant, Okla.; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
