Graveside services for W. G. Walkup, 83, of Lubbock, TX and formerly of New Deal, TX, were held at 10:00 am Thursday, August 14, 2008, in the Abernathy Cemetery with Jim Clayton, Vista Care Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Services are under the direction of Abell Funeral Home and Flower Shop of Abernathy, TX. The family gathered at Abell Funeral Home Wednesday evening, August 13, 2008, from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm to visit with friends. Mr. Walkup died Monday, August 11, 2008, in Lubbock, TX.
He was born July 1, 1925 in Wilson, OK. He served in the United States Navy from 1943 until 1946. On December 31, 1949, he married Johnell Willians in Carlsbad, NM, she preceded him in death September of 1992. He had been a longtime resident of the New Deal area until moving to Groesbeck, TX in 1974 and returning to the New Deal area in 1988. He had worked in the oil fields and farmed.
He is survived by 5 children; Claudia Toledo of Stockton, CA, Beverly Rhidenour of Groesbeck, TX, Scott Walkup of New Deal, TX, John Walkup of Fallbrook, CA and Leah Thomas of Stockton, CA, 11 grandchildren and 1 sister, Peggy Oldham of Lamesa, TX. The Walkup family would like to express a special "Thank You" to the staff at Bender Terrace Nursing Home in Lubbock, TX, for the personal care provided to their Dad. Memorial suggestions are; Vista Care Hospice, 7606 University, Suite C, Lubbock, TX 79423 or to a favorite charity.
