First burial in Spring Hill Cemetery

Nancy’s Story
The earliest gravestone in the cemetery is a small and flat new piece of marble with pottery shards inscribed on its top.

The story tells that Nancy’s father was a traveling pottery maker who happened to come into the area bringing his portable kiln to make and sell crockery.

Much of a family’s food, such as sauerkraut and sorghum syrup and other goods would be stored in huge pottery jars.

When his daughter died here, the potter made
his best jar as a gravestone, inscribed her name, and buried his daughter on the hill that is Spring Hill.

The jar is now gone but the shards bearing the name and
date have been placed on a marble marker resting near
this memorial.
