A 19-year-old Stinnett man died early today when the car he was in left Highway 136 south of Fritch, rolled down an embankment, and landed on its roof.
The Highway Patrol identified the victim as Stephen M. Whitfield, who lived at 430 Brown in Stinnett. He was dead at the scene of the accident, which was not discovered until after dawn today. The patrol said it could not determine what time the accident occurred.
Investigators said the car was traveling north on Highway 136 when it ran off the east side of the road. It flipped end over end more than three times before coming to rest on its top.
Another person in the car was identified at Pam Hickman, 22, who lived at 903 S. Williams in Stinnett. She is in St. Anthony's Hospital in Amarillo with internal and pelvis injuries and broken ribs. Her condition was listed as critical.
The wreck was found by employees of the Turkey Creek Gas Plant south of Fritch who called the highway patrol and ambulance.
Investigators said they have not been able to determine who was driving the car and said they know few details about the crash.
Whitfield was the son of Mrs. Patricia Whitfield of Stinnett and Bill J. Whitfield, who formerly lived in Stinnett.
Miss Hickman is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Hickman of Stinnett.
The Highway Patrol is still trying to determine the cause of the crash.
