SPEARMAN - Carl M. Archer, 83, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken Cole and the Rev. Jim Medley officiating. Burial will be in Holt Cemetery by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Mr. Archer was born Dec. 16, 1920, in Hutchinson County and was a lifetime resident of Spearman.

He married Mary Frances "Peggy" Garrett on Aug. 22, 1939, in Liberal, Kan. He was a farmer, rancher and oil and gas producer. He attended First Baptist Church. He owned and operated Speartex Grain since 1967 and was a director of Texas Grain and Feed Association. He was a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of Spearman Rotary Club for many years and was listed in Who's Who in America.

Carl and his wife were 1996 Spearman Citizens of the Year and 2000 Spearman Citizens of the Century. They celebrated their 65th anniversary on Aug. 22, 2004. Carl always gave to every cause or when he saw a person in need. Recently he led a fundraiser to purchase defibrillators for every law enforcement officer in Hansford County. He was a member of the board of directors for the Spearman Scholarship Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bob and Gertie Archer; and four brothers, R.B. Jr., Dan, Oscar and Charles Patten Archer.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mary Frances Dixon and husband, Perry, of Spearman and Carla Johnson and husband, Mike, of Morse; three grandsons, Dr. Mike Dixon and wife, Shannon, of Amarillo, Garrett Gumfory and wife, Mika, of Stratham, N.H., and Monty Dixon and wife, Dr. Amber, of Morse; three granddaughters, Carlee Montgomery and husband, Jack, of Dallas, Dr. Kathryn Mancini and husband, Brian, of Vernon and Julie Gumfory of Lubbock; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be to American Heart Association or Hansford Manor, 707 Roland St., Spearman, TX 79081.
