Final rites for John Marion Ownbey, pioneer Hutchinson County resident, were held at 3 p.m. today in Stinnett.
Ownbey, 85, was born in Erath County, Texas on Dec. 15, 1872. He was present for the Oklahoma Territory "run" in 1892, and filed on land near Sentinel, Okla. He was married to Miss Emma Belle Huckaby, of Paris, Texas, in Canadian in 1899. The couple moved to Hutchinson County in 1904, and Ownbey was actively engaged in farming and ranching near Morse until 1924. He has made his home on the ranch since that time.
Ownbey died early Saturday night at the Underwood Clinic in Amarillo, after a lengthy illness.
Services today, under the direction of Boxwell Bros. Funeral Home of Amarillo, were held in the Stinnett Methodist Church, with Mr. Joe Lomax, former pastor of the Stinnett Church of Christ, officiating. He was assisted by the Rev. Carroll Jones, pastor of the Methodist church.
Pallbearers were Bill Jones, Melvin Jones, Carl Shaw, Milford Shaw, Robert Ownbey, Eual Chisum, Ferrell Early and June Lewis. Interment was planned in the Holt Cemetery.
Survivors include the widow; three sons, Ray of Stinnett, Doyle of Perryton and Coy of Amarillo; four daughters, Mrs. Beulah Ben Bort and Mrs. Ona Faye Watkins, both of Gruver, Mrs. Mary Lamb Smith of Amarillo, Mrs. Lawn Jones of Woodward, Okla., and Mrs. Carrie Shaw of Cheyenne, Okla.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
