A prominent Hutchinson County rancher was found shot to death in his parked pickup truck about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday near Sunray.

Dead is Robert Ownbey, 48.

Justice of the Peace Jake Early of Stinnett pronounced him dead at Hansford County Memorial Hospital in Spearman about 6 p.m., but made no ruling on cause of death. The body was taken to Boxwell Brothers Funeral home in Spearman.

Early immediately ordered an autopsy, for today in Amarillo, and said an inquest and ruling would follow later in the week.

Ownbey had been ill and despondent prior to his death, officers reported.

His body was found by his wife, Jenna, about 3:15 p.m., Judge Early said. Ownbey was found slumped in the front seat, with a .22 rifle in his lap, according to Deputy Sheriff Jack Peoples.

Ownbey had been shot one time about 2 inches below the right ear.

His pickup was parked near Farm-to-Market road 1060 and the Sunray Highway, west of Stinnett, beside the McCoy Feedlot on the western edge of the county.

Ownbey, well-known in the Panhandle area, was a rancher whose home is some 15 miles south of Spearman.

Deputy Peoples and Tom Ramby momentarily detained a man at the scene late Wednesday, according to reports, but the man was released after investigation.

Ownbey had been a resident of the Spearman area for 11 years. Prior to that time, he lived in the Holt Community.

He was born Oct 26, 1919, in Old Adobe Walls, and was a stockman and World War II veteran. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the Borger Knife and Fork Club and Khiva Shrine.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the First Methodist Church in Spearman with the Rev Wesley Daniel, pastor, and the Rev. B.T. Shoemake of the First Baptist Church of Spearman officiating.

Burial will be in Hansford Cemetery under direction of Boxwell Brothers Funeral Home.

Survivors include the wife, Jenna V., and daughters, Robbie and Donna and Martha, and sons, James and William, all of the home; another daughter, Mrs Jim Archer of El Paso; a son, Jimmy of College Station; his mother Mrs Abbye Ownbey of Spearman; and two grandchildren.
