FRITCH — Gary Douglas Adkins, 64, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m, Tuesday in Westlawn Memorial Park with Jake Minton officiating. Arrangements are by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch.

Gary was born Nov. 6, 1949, in Borger to Doug and Wanda Adkins. He accepted Christ at an early age while attending First Baptist Church in Phillips. Gary graduated from Phillips High School and was a gifted multi-sport varsity athlete on outstanding Blackhawk football and basketball teams, including the '67 state football semifinalists. Gary graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in finance and worked in the finance and automobile business for many years, earning a reputation for being professional and fair to all of his customers. Prior to retirement, Gary worked many years at the Clements Unit in Amarillo. He showed respect to the inmates, receiving it from them in return.

Following retirement, Gary dedicated himself to lovingly caring for his parents in the twilights of their lives. Gary was forthright, honest and loyal, and had a soft spot in his heart for children and his beloved dogs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Joel.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; a daughter, Stacey Adkins of Lubbock; a son, Jason Adkins of Borger; five grandchildren, Lilie, Seth, Aubrey, Madison, and Brianna Adkins, all of Borger; a sister, Marion Kindy and husband Danny of Borger; a brother, Robin Adkins and wife Valerie of Amarillo; and many beloved nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, and cousins.

The family wants to express its heartfelt thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Southwest for the loving care and comfort they provided to Gary.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Kindy, Scott Kindy, Seth Adkins, Michael Webb, Gary Winters and Bill Maddox. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials be to Joel Douglas Adkins Memorial Scholarship Fund or Doug and Wanda Adkins Memorial Scholarship Fund at Frank Phillips College, in care of College Advancement, P.O. Box 5118, Borger, TX 79008.
