Alan Wayne Bates
July 8, 1953 - June 30, 2014

Alan Wayne Bates, 60, passed away Monday, June 30, 2014.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 pm Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Borger, Texas. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. His memory may be honored with a gift to Helping Hands, 517 W Jefferson St, Borger, TX, 79007, Rainbow Room, P.O. Box 1391, Borger, TX, 79008, or a charity of choice.

Alan was born July 8, 1953 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma to Arnold and Billie Bates.

He married Sheila Ennis in Borger on August 16, 1975. Alan was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Amarillo Area Corvette Club. He was formerly a member of the Black Sheep Squadron Model Airplane Club. Alan, a capital project engineering manager, retired in August of 2008 from Phillips Petroleum/Conoco Phillips after 34 years of service. He loved NASCAR, watching and working with open wheel dirt track racing, and cruising and participating in Corvette Club activities, but nothing filled his heart with joy like his wife, son and daughter.

He is preceded in death by his parents; Grandpa and Grandma Gage; and sister, Carolyn Davenport.

Survivors include his wife, Sheila of the home; son, Caleb Alan Bates and wife, Whitney Brooke of Houston; daughter, Whitney Elizabeth Bates of Austin; mother-in-law, Delpha Ennis of Borger; uncle, Elmer Thompson of Kansas; nieces, Kelly and Melissa; nephews, Mike, Zane and Eric; numerous great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces and great great nephews; numerous cousins; and a host of friends.

Sheila Gay Bates, 65, passed away Sunday, November 15, 2020.

Private family services are scheduled. Sheila will lie in state at Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger beginning 8 am to 8 pm Wednesday and Thursday. In lieu of flowers her memory may be honored with a gift to Borger Snack Pak 4 Kids, 701 Park Place Ave, Amarillo, Texas, 79101 please place Sheila’s name in the memo line or the Faith City Missions, 600 N Tyler St, Amarillo, TX 79107.

Sheila was born August 26, 1955 in Borger to O.D. Ennis and Delpha Amyx Ennis. She married Alan Wayne Bates on August 16, 1975 in Borger. Sheila was an active member of Stinnett United Methodist Church, Amarillo Area Corvette Club and the Red Hat Society. If you knew Sheila, then you were blessed. She had a servant heart who was always willing to help anyone that needed it, she was truly a giver with a generous spirit and full of joy. Sheila enjoyed traveling, planning and hosting parties, collecting Coca-Cola memorabilia, lighthouses and antiquing. However nothing brought more joy to her life than her family, especially the light of her life, her granddaughter Emerson.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Alan.

Survivors include her daughter, Whitney Bates of Cedar Park; son, Caleb Alan Bates and wife Whitney Brooke of Spring; granddaughter, Emerson; brother, Rick Ennis and wife Sharon of Lubbock; numerous nieces and nephews; numerous great nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
