Newton and I, Mildred Beals arrived in Borger June 2, 1931, coming from Great Bend, Kansas. Newton began work on construction at the Booster Station in Fritch, which was being built at the time. Following completion of the work he was employed at the Hawkins Service Station at Washington and Main in Borger. Washington Street was later named First Street. At that time we lived between Washington and Adams Streets, in the area now occupied by the Ford dealership.

Jobs were scarce but Newt got work at the refinery of the Phillips Petroleum Company, in Phillips in November of that year. We moved to Phillips, living in the area of the High School, (which wasn't there at the time.) Our daughter Lawanda had been born at the home in Borger in July. Rose Marie was born the following year in Borger at the Hutchinson County hospital, which was at Sixth and Weatherly Street. This hospital building was later converted to an apartment complex, then moved to Fritch, where it now stands.

The family lived in Phillips for thirteen years and the girls attended Phillips School. Later the family moved to Borger again in 1945, and Newt became owner of a garage on Weatherly Street. He once had the Hudson Agency. He operated the garage until his retirement.

The girls graduated from Borger High and from Frank Phillips College. Rose Marie also graduated from the University of Austin. She teaches in the Borger School System at Middle School.

Rose Marie married Charles L. Ballman, who was a lawyer in Austin. They moved to Borger in 1955, where Charles practiced law until his sudden death in August, 1979. Their oldest son, Chuck was born in Austin and Cathy and Clay were born in Borger.

Lawanda married Cordell Wagner and they have resided in Houston since 1950. Their three sons were born in Houston. David is now a Borger attorney, practicing in the offices of the late Charles Ballman. His wife Laura teaches in the Borger School System. The other Wagner sons are Mark and Steven, both living in Houston.

When we came, Borgers long Main Street, oil field odors, and boom town shacks were no welcome sight to us but the friendly people made all of that worthwhile. Trees and fertile ground were missed in contrast to the farmlands of Kansas and the lovely country in central Illinois where Newt was born and reared.

The depression had set in and Borger's population had settled down to about five-thousand. Dust bowl days soon followed and housewives fought carbon and dust. Eggs were once bought for six cents a dozen at Davenports Open Market at Second and Main. A good beef roast was about fifty cents. A nice cotton dress could be bought for $2.98. The post office was on Fourth Street and later moved to the 500 block.

The Beals had Box 51 for many years. Many people complained of being "scared" of Borger, especially at night, but it didn't appear so to the Beals. Borger seemed settled, following the boom, five years later, there were churches, nice stores, a library (upstairs in city hall) and a small but adequate hospital.

We began to feel at home. Like many others we planned to leave Borger but the feeling wore away as the years passed. Our daughters were born here, the Ballman children, our grandchildren, grew up here and our grandson, David Wagner is now an attorney here. We enjoy our many friends, and after fifty years we are home folks firmly rooted in and proud of Borger.
