Sidney R. Brandon, 87, of Amarillo, formerly of Fritch and Borger, died Monday, June 25, 2012, in Amarillo.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Chapel at Minton-Chatwell Funeral Home in Borger with Jake Minton of Borger officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Cemetery. Arrangements are by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Sid was born Dec. 5, 1924, in Hamilton to David Ray and Mae Alexander Brandon. He attended Albany High School and joined the Navy after the attack on Pearl Harbor. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, Luzon, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Sid was decorated for bravery during his service in the Pacific. He was a 32 Degree of the Scottish Rite and a member of Unity Lodge of Borger and Khiva Shrine Temple of Amarillo.

On July 24, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Bettie June Rich, in Orange. They lived in the Borger-Fritch area for 60 years before moving to Amarillo six years ago. Sid and Bettie enjoyed square dancing for many years. Sid was Bettie's primary caregiver during her 13-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Bettie preceded him in death in
January 2010.

Sid coached little league baseball in Borger for many years. His red-and-white El Camino was a welcome sight to many boys heading to practice or a game, as he would haul as many boys as the bed would hold regardless for which team they played. Sid retired from the J.M. Huber Corp. in 1986 after 34 years of service.

Sid was pretty much a self-taught engineer and mechanic. He kept many family and friends' vehicles and other equipment running throughout the years and was always willing to help anyone in need. He had a keen sense of humor and will truly be missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include two sons, Thomas R. of Dumas and Robert S. of Fritch; a granddaughter, Jennifer Newby; two great-granddaughters, Destiny and Emily of Amarillo; three sisters-in-law, Bonnie Smith of Abilene, Leda Wagoner of Fort Worth and Shirley Vancil of Richardson; a brother-in-law, Kenneth Rich of Little Elm; and a special cousin, Rodney Price of Abilene.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to the staff and caregivers of Canyonview Estates and Childers Place for the many acts of love and kindness extended to their beloved Sid throughout more than the last six years.

The family suggests memorials be to a favorite charity.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
