Roy D. Brinson, 97, of Amarillo, died Thursday, October 20, 2011.
Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 24, 2011 at Temple Baptist Church with Chad Mantooth officiating. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. in Westlawn Memorial Park in Borger. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors, 2800 Paramount Blvd.
"A man of many hats"
Born March 17, 1914. He was 97 years old!
Roy wore many hats during his long life. He had many titles: Christian, Mr. B, brother, entrepreneur, father, grandfather, great grandfather, husband, sailor, patriot, cattleman, farmer, boss, city commissioner, grocerman, pore ole Roy, land developer, water utility operator, Rotarian, chief cook and bottle washer, investor, salesman, fisherman, realtor, trader, care giver, mentor, friend, and a great story teller. Roy had many titles during his life time, all of which he enjoyed. He did love to tell stories! You can read one of his Navy stories by Googling his name and finding "The Very Wet Sailor".
Roy grew up on a black land cotton farm near Frost, Texas, a small town south of the Dallas / Ft. Worth metroplex. His parents, Phillip and Geneva Brinson had eight children. Roy is the last of the brothers and sisters to make their heavenly journey.
Roy grew up during the Great Depression and he never forgot it. He was frugal and loved a bargain. Oh how he loved to grocery shop!
He started his business career by working in a grocery store in Wellington, Tx. While in Wellington he met and married Evelyn Joy Burt. His business career was interrupted by World War II. He became a sailor and served aboard the USS Salt Lake City, a heavy cruiser. He wanted to be a store keeper on board, but because of his aptitude with math, he served as Fire Controlman. Roy never owned a gun during his lifetime but for those Navy years he was one of the trigger fingers for those massive guns on board his ship. His time was spent in the Pacific where he was in most of the great sea battles, and his stories began. He could tell you story after story with amazing recall of far away names. He missed his family but he, along with the Greatest Generations group, was a patriot and loved his country. He never really got rid of the "salt" in his blood.
Upon his return to the US, he opened his first grocery store in Amarillo and was very successful. The business prospered and grew, in 1953 he moved his family to Borger, Tx and purchased the Yoes Brothers grocery. During the late 1950's he served as a city commissioner for the City of Borger.
In 1961 he along with his partner/son Burt, started a land development around the City of Fritch. It involved several thousand acres and is now home to over 4,500 people. He operated Hi Texas Water Company, a water utility, to service the developed areas. Some of the names of the developments are Arroyo Verde, Ponderosa, Sage Mesa, Antelope Mesa and many more.
Roy was married to Evelyn Joy Burt for 53 years. Joy preceded him in death in 1989. In 1990, Roy married Pauline Ellis of Amarillo. They were married for 21 years. Pauline survives him.
Roy is survived by two children, Burt Brinson of Houston and Beverly Brinson Fry and her husband David Fry of Amarillo , six grandchildren Brooks Brinson of Washington D.C. Bo Brinson of Houston, Tx, Branch Brinson of Katy, Texas, Bonner Brinson of Fulshear, Texas. Aaron Fry of Laguna, NM, and Raegan Fry King of Waco, Tx . Roy had eight great grandchildren.
visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
