JIM COPELAND

James H. Copeland, son of the late Rev. W. E. Copeland, was called by the Death Angel last Friday, March 20th, at 12 o'clock. Mr. Copeland was convalescing from a recent attack of flu, and had only been up for a short time when he suffered an acute attack of indigestion from which he never rallied.
James H. Copeland was born in Washington county, near Brenham, in September, 1869, and would have been 56 years of age had he lived until his next birthday. He came to Rockdale in the early days and has grown up with the town. Seventeen years ago Mr. Copeland united with the Baptist church, and was a consistent christian. He loved music and song and was a constant attendant upon all services, taking an active part in church affairs and church government. For several years he was church clerk and secretary of the Sunday school. He was a man of quiet disposition, but firm in his convictions.
Mr. Copeland was married in 1905 to Mrs. Izalee Evans, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Turner, who with a sister and other relatives survive.
Mr. Copeland was a carpenter by trade and was a member of the local union. Several years ago he formed a partnership with Jno. A. Harris and continued with him up to the time of his death. Many beautiful residences in Rockdale stand as mute evidence of his skill as a craftsman. At the time of his death he was engaged in erecting a beautiful home for the Christian church, a building that will long remain as a monument to his memory.
Mr. Copeland was a member of the Woodmen of the World, the Maccabes and Carpenters and Joiners of America, and at various times held positions of trust in these organizations.
Funeral services were held from the First Baptist church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock. Rev. Jesse Garrett, officiating. Assisting in the services were Revs. J. A. Tharp, pastor of the Methodist church, and D. C. Wallace, pastor of the Presbyterian church. Interment wa at the Old City Cemetery where a host of friends and relatives paid their last tribute of love to a departed friend.
The honorary pall bearers were: A. Longmire, R. C. Williams, C. E. Wisecup, W. E. Montague, J. E. Dyer, Helen Ashby, Jno. A. Harris and W. E. James. The active pall bearers were: Jim Eads, C. O. Brown, Clay Allen, E. I. Wade, C. E. Harve and W. W. White.
In the death of Mr. Copeland Rockdale has lost an honest, upright and honored citizen, the Baptist church a staunch, consecrated supporter, and the citizenry a true and loyal friend.
Out-of-town relatives who attended the funeral were: Mrs. E. C. Heslip, of Caldwell, a niece of the deceased; Cecil Cline, of Ballinger; Mr. and Mrs. W, H, Brooks, of Houston; Mr. and Mrs. Frank Turner, of Smithvile; Mr. and Mrs. Mike Berry, of Taylor; Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Wilson, Mrs. Mollie Ryan and Mr. and Mrs. John Cline, of Thorndale; Mr. and Mrs. Sharp Young, of Thrall; Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Calloway and Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie Calloway, of Mumford.
The Reporter joins with the many friends of the family in sympathy for the bereaved widow and relatives.
